DEANS STORY

This story follows Dean, a 36 year old male who had several hair transplants in the 80's when hair plugs were the order of the day. Dean has had to wear a hairsystem for many years to cover up his unnatural hairline. Recently after becoming tired of the daily maintenance needed to keep it looking natural, he decided to look into corrective surgery. His quest led him to the New Hair Institute in Los Angeles where he has been undergoing several corrective procedures designed to remove the unnatural plugs and allow him to regain a normal looking hairline so he no longer has to wear his hairsystem.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Nearly half of all the hair restoration surgery performed at the New Hair Institute involves some type of corrective procedures to fix the hair transplants, scalp reductions and flaps performed by other physicians. Using Follicular Unit Transplantation, they have the ability to correct the old "Pluggy" or "Corn-Row" look that resulted from outdated or poorly planned procedures. This can be accomplished by camouflaging the old work or, when necessary, actually removing the larger grafts and re-transplanting the hair in a more natural pattern. This is carried out with the aid of the stereo-microscope that gives them the ability to remove old plugs, separate them into individual follicular units, and re-implant them with minimal damage.

The yellow region indicates the area of scalp that will be removed that contains the old style hair plugs. The individual hairs will then be cut out of the skin and then transplanted into the green region.

Microscopic dissection also allows the retrieval of donor hair in, and around, the scar tissue produced by the old transplants, significantly increasing the amount of usable hair. This latter technique is extremely important since so many patients that have had older types of surgery are left with a severely depleted donor supply. Preserving every follicle is essential in order to make the most out of repair procedures.

Dean's procedure is actually being done in 2 separate procedures. The first procedure will excise or remove the previous pluggy grafts from the hair line and cut them into follicular units and re-implant them back into the scalp.

The second will be completed about 2 months later and will involve closing the donor area at the back of the head. At the same time additional hair will be taken from the donor area and will be transplanted in front of the fine scar where the old grafts were excised. This will bring the hair line forward as well as hide the area where the old plugs were removed.
